I mean, in the movie the Containment Unit wasn't a parallel dimension like in the cartoon, but a plausible and realistic construct to contain the ghosts. Or not? The episode "Take Two" establishes that the RGB characters are the real deal and that Ghostbusters is just a movie. Also, the Containment Unit in the series is, IMO, a bit like Warehouse 13--having so many ghosts in it alters the inside into a "dreamscape." Alternatively, the parallel dimension feel is just how our heroes perceive it when they go inside.
