Seems almost ridiculous that no Go-er ever dedicated to her a post, let alone a whole thread! I bet we're all so Futura-addicted that sometimes we forget Jessica is equally important to the Ghostbusters team. Added by Devil of the Ghostbusters:

While I have a thing for the blue skinned gal, this reporter gal wasn't all that bad. She was very informative in the show for the gang, and was a assets to the team. But... Futura still was more hot. ;D

It's funny because I couldn't bear her since I know her. But I watched the show with the german dub! A few weeks ago I started to watch the show with the original voices. That's when I start to like Jessica as well. With the german voice she seems to be much more arrogant, so she gives you no chance to like her even if she's a friend of the ghostbusters. That's a much different feeling than watching the show with the original voices where she acts more naturally and likeable. Since watching the original version I can accept her. I think she's okay. It's funny how the voices make the difference. By the way, Jessica is the only charakter who has this negative effect on me regarding the german dub.

I think Jessica is 100% important to the series and essentially a pivotal character because she is the NORMAL woman thrown into this fantastic and hallucinating universe. She is the human perspective, the "average" human being involved into this mind-blowing battle beyond space and time. So, in a way, Jessica represents us. Everyday she must deal with superpowered pink bats, mutant gorillas, spectral dimensions and things like the Skelevision. She is a a very rationale person fully immersed into an unlogic world.

I've always had a soft spot for Jessica. And you're right saying that she's the most "normal" person from the show.

Part of what I like about this series is the fact that they put not one, but two strong females in semi-lead roles that could hold their own against the baddies! I'm likely the minority here, but I actually like Jessica more than Futura. I like her in part because like others said, she's the most 'normal.' She balances out the strangeness that we see in this series. And looking at it from a side angle--she's doing her part in helping to keep our boys in business. Her getting involved with them gives her inside information and consistent stories for reporting, but it also gives the boys' business free advertising and marketing and jobs. They've had several ghostbusting missions thanks to her. Their reputation and that of their business will grow as a result. We see this even in episodes. That president of Galaxy Airlines is an example of that. He said they came 'highly recommended.' He heard that from somewhere. Then that owner of the ghost amusement park said he'd recognized them from seeing them on tv. It's too bad we never got future seasons of this show because it would've been nice to see if that 'hinted' relationship with Jake ever became anything more or not. Though Jake's playing with fire (pun intended). If this 'hinted relationship' with her sours, so could the positive press for his business, unless she's professional enough to keep reporting objectively and not let personal feelings mix into it.
Also, I'm unsure how red-heads are portrayed in other parts of the world, but in the USA, they have certain traits or streotypes that are associated with being a ginger--at least for females. Like their hair, they're fiery & dangerous in personality--strong, defiant, bossy, sometimes arrogant, and perhaps most of all--have a sexy allure. Red-headed kids are/were typically bullied and picked on while growing up. They tend to develop a tough demeanor and are thick-skinned. Red hair is a rare and recessive genetic trait, making it special in its own right. Jessica seems to fit right into that stereotype.
